I woke to the call
She was dead on the floor
No reason , no respite
She had gone overnight

No parent should see
Their 29 year old daughter leave
They said she couldn’t breathe
Was the reason they gave me

It was a grey Monday
Rain owned the sky
Darkness greeted me
Over a phone line

It’s funny how the silence grows
The loneliness a cord
Binding your aspirations
In a moment, love is gone

In that bitter silence
A realization made clear
The vision of the life you had
Gone with the rain and the tears

Silence is a funny thing
Because it can be loud
When your future is rearranged
Leaving you empty and hollowed out

In the time after you are left to contemplate
How useless it had all been
How cruel was the fate
Though it was a day too late

Desolate in your perspective
Empty in your eyes
Nothing left to say
You walk away without goodbyes

30 years lost in increments
An issue at a time
A young man gave his moments
An old man left to cry

Loneliness doesn’t happen in an instant
Silence is a lullaby
It leaves you sitting in an empty room
Asking the universe, “Why?”
